Goodreads Summary: Jessica reveals for the first time her inner monologue and most intimate struggles. Guided by the journals she’s kept since age fifteen, and brimming with her unique humor and down-to-earth humanity, Open Book is as inspiring as it is entertaining...Now, America’s Sweetheart, preacher’s daughter, pop phenomenon, reality TV pioneer, and the billion-dollar fashion mogul invites readers on a remarkable journey, examining a life that blessed her with the compassion to help others but also burdened her with an almost crippling need to please. Open Book is Jessica Simpson using her voice, heart, soul, and humor to share things she’s never shared before…Her book shares the wisdom and inspirations she’s learned and shows the real woman behind all the pop-culture clichés — “chicken or fish,” “Daisy Duke,” “football jinx,” “mom jeans,” “sexual napalm…” and more. Open Book is an opportunity to laugh and cry with a close friend, one that will inspire you to live your best, most authentic life, now that she is finally living hers.
I have said it before, and I will say it again. I am a sucker for celebrity biographies. The girl from Boy Meets World, Andy Cohen’s first 2, Kathy Griffin, Lauren Graham, Taylor Armstrong, the girl from Vanderpump Rules, Busy Phillips, Candace Cameron Bure, Jodie Sweetin…the list goes on and on. When I heard Jessica Simpson had come out with her autobiography and touched on her relationships and career, I knew I HAD to read it.
In my early reality TV loving days, I could not get enough of Newlyweds. I was in college, and we would get together to watch. We would laugh at how stupid she was. That couldn’t be real, could it? I remember thinking in the early seasons, “how does Nick put up with her?” but by the end of the last season it was “how does she put up with Nick?” I remember not being surprised when the news hit of their divorce. I was a fan of her songs Without You and Public Affair. Reading about how those songs came to be, for me, was very interesting.
The rumors are true – she really does speak about EVERYTHING. I feel like nothing was off limits, including her dad’s behavior. From her failed Mickey Mouse Club audition, to her religious singing career, to her relationship with Nick, the constant barrage of being told to lose weight and be more like Britney and Christina. She speaks freely about her wedding and divorce. We see just how awful John Mayer can be (because you know he’s a douche just by looking at him – I was never a fan). We find out what really happened between her and Johnny Knoxville. And finally, how she ended up where she is today. And – oh yeah – that “mom jeans” fiasco.
I quite enjoyed this trip down tabloid memory lane. If you were a fan of any of her work, then you might enjoy this trip too. If you were a 98 degrees fan, and you absolutely hated her, then maybe this book isn’t for you. And for those that watch Ellen and saw her horrible interview – SPOILER ALERT – She was bombed out of her mind. I did shout out, like the rest of the country, “I KNEW IT!”
