Calm Monsters, Kind Monsters – Calm It Down Kids!
Another perfect book for my family has dropped into our laps that connects with both of my kids! I have been struggling to have my kids sleep throughout the night. My daughter is learning about mindfulness in school. To have the Sesame Street characters discuss all of this – it is the perfect book for us!
I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Before You Read This Book
Quick homework assignment before you read the book! Look up the Sesame Street video “Belly Breathe” with Common and Colbie Cailat. My kids have grown up with this song, and I laugh every time because Elmo looks like Frazzle, and I love Frazzle Monster. They have watched it for years, and that helped them understand this book.
My 2-Year Old’s Review
To Karen Kenney – thank you thank you thank you! My son is at that lovely point where he loves to fight bed time. Part of the mindfulness of the book is putting your body to bed. We now say good night to every part of his body (including his bottom, which gives him the good night giggles). As we read the story, he listened and followed the instructions, whether it was a belly breathe or giving himself a hug. The next night, he asked if we could read it again. That’s a win for this boy!
My 5-Year Old’s Review
My daughter likes to pretend she is “over” Sesame Street, but the second the show comes on, or a book comes out, she comes running. This one was no different. After my son went to bed, I spoke with her about the book, and she said that she really liked it. We tied it into the mindfulness lesson from school and she fell asleep singing Belly Breathe to herself. This was after we had to find every part of her body, including her nails, to say good night to!
Mom’s Review
