Full Flight by Ashley Schumacher

Break out your marching band gear – we are heading back to high school where young love can be found in the band room!

Everyone else in the tiny town of Enfield, Texas calls fall football season, but for the forty-three members of the Fighting Enfield Marching Band, it’s contest season. And for new saxophonist Anna James, it’s her first chance to prove herself as the great musician she’s trying hard to be.

When she’s assigned a duet with mellophone player Weston Ryan, the boy her small-minded town thinks of as nothing but trouble, she’s equal parts thrilled and intimidated. But as he helps her with the duet, and she sees the smile he seems to save just for her, she can’t help but feel like she’s helping him with something too.

After her strict parents find out she’s been secretly seeing him and keep them apart, together they learn what it truly means to fight for something they love. With the marching contest nearing, and the two falling hard for one another, the unthinkable happens, and Anna is left grappling for a way forward without Weston.

A heartbreaking novel about finding your first love and what happens when it’s over too soon.

I was such a big fan of Amelia Unabridged, I couldn’t wait for this story. This reads differently though – I found that it was hard to connect with Anna and Weston and the first 80% of the book is a bit on the slow side. It picks up with the same emotions that made me fall for Amelia – I just wish that I felt it a little more throughout the story rather than just the ending. This book had a bit too much teenage angst, even for me.

For those that played in the marching band in high school, this may bring back some memories for you! As I was a friend to band members pulled out of class for practice in elementary school, I could relate to how Anna felt for why she wanted to join the band.

There is also a theme of birds that is skillfully woven throughout the story that had me captivated. I loved how it related to both Weston and Anna. Side note – this story has back and forth POV’s from Weston and Anna for each chapter.

Based on my watery eyes at the end of this story, even with all the angst, this story is a 4-star read for me. Full Flight is available now!
