Goodreads Summary: In their highly-anticipated first book, the hilarious mom duo with millions of followers explores all the ridiculous shit you’re expected to do to keep multiple humans alive and happy-ish, and celebrates the love for the friends who get you through it.
Kristin Hensley and Jen Smedley, the creators of #IMomSoHard, are just like you and your best mom friend, only funnier and with more wine…This is not a self-help book. Kristin and Jen know that you probably didn’t get to shower today and that the last thing you need is advice on all the stuff you’re doing wrong. Instead, Kristin and Jen talk nipple hair, sex after marriage, Mom-bods, and their unhealthy obsession with Khal Drogo from Game of Thrones. #IMomSoHard is packed with the back-and-forth laugh-out-loud best-friend banter that Kristin and Jen are known for, with plenty of real talk about post-partum depression, bullying, and the dark thoughts that plague every mom. Throughout it all, they know the ups and downs of motherhood often have nothing to do with your kids—it’s the female friendships and solidarity you have with other moms that makes it all worthwhile.
As I mentioned in my last post, I have been on a weekend getaway by myself – a mommy vacation. It was long overdue, as I have never been away from my kids overnight since they were born. Time for them to understand what it’s like to miss me, and to get some rest and relaxation. So, naturally, the book I decided to read had a mom theme to it. Let’s be honest – the whole time I was here, I missed my kids like crazy while relishing in my Bravo binge-watching, wine drinking and binge reading haze.
This book started strong. So strong, I texted my best friend who is also a mom to a 4 year old and 2 year old. I asked her if she had read this book, and she said she hadn’t. I was already making plans to mail this book to her. It has sass. It has mom stories we can relate to. It has husband stories we can relate to. I found myself laughing along with them. It was pointing to a 5 bookstack review. I am an honest mom who never tries to make life pretty for social media, or in speaking with other moms, so this was speaking to my soul.
But then it got repetitive.
Towards the end of the book I found myself skipping pages. The theme of each chapter may have been different, but there’s only so many times I can read the same message within each theme. Change it up a bit! The stories were great, as I could relate to them, but if you only have one thing to say at the end of the day it does not make for a great book. Had I read this book over the course of a month (which is my standard time for reading a book courtesy of my children), then maybe it would not feel so obvious. Having binge-read it though, it stuck out like a sore thumb. I found myself gazing at the water more and more and reading less and less.
Unfortunately, this is one of those books that I will caution readers that it is only for moms. It could be for dads that wonder what their wives/baby mamas are going through, but really it was written for moms by moms. And I think it can be a worthwhile read for us when we are up late with our kids and need that extra push of knowing we aren’t alone in our struggles. Mom life is hard. No one is an island, no matter how much we think we are.
