Just Last Night by Mhairi McFarlane

Yikes! A head cold has taken over my household and has put my reading on pause.

While I recover, let’s play catch up on some great books that I read with my most recent library haul!

Eve, Justin, Susie, and Ed have been friends since they were teenagers. Now in their thirties, the four are as close as ever, Thursday pub trivia night is sacred, and Eve is still secretly in love with Ed. Maybe she should have moved on by now, but she can’t stop thinking about what could have been. And she knows Ed still thinks about it, too.

But then, in an instant, their lives are changed forever. In the aftermath, Eve’s world is upended. As stunning secrets are revealed, she begins to wonder if she really knew her friends as well as she thought. And when someone from the past comes back into her life, Eve’s future veers in a surprising new direction…

They say every love story starts with a single moment. What if it was just last night?

During the pandemic, I read Don’t You Forget About Me and really enjoyed it. While there were serious topics woven throughout the story, I remember laughing and enjoying the book as a whole. In Just Last Night, I laughed a LOT less, but still enjoyed the story. Be warned – this book does go into grief after losing a loved one, is very emotional and has traces of gaslighting.

Eve. Poor Eve. She’s in a tight friendship group since high school and is in love with one of them. Ed. Who’s engaged to be married. But not to her. But she could have been! Don’t worry – there are flashbacks to explain all that to us. But BLAMMO – their lives are changed forever one morning that no one saw coming (no spoilers).

As Eve begins picking up the pieces of her life from the fallout, she also begins to discover secrets she never knew about her friends. This forces her to have to confront her past and her feelings, all the while someone else from her past pops into her life that she wasn’t expecting.

I was nervous how this book was going to end. I hate to say I enjoyed reading this, as it is a serious subject matter, but I did find it difficult to put the book down, as I wanted to know more and more of what was going to happen next. There were a couple of times I laughed, and some times where I yelled at my book “WOULD YOU JUST DO…”

This is an author I am really enjoying, and will look into reading more of her backlist!
